1st International Art Expo Malaysia

The range of works in paintings, batik art, prints, sculptures, ceramics, installations and photography was staggering, reflecting national impulses as well as distinct individual expressions.

An extension of art impresario Vincent Sim Tiak Choo’s dream and daring, to bring together not only artistic impressions from all over the world but also the creators.

Chung Chen Sun, academician and grandmaster in Chinese art, gave a demonstration of the way he paints as did his equally accomplished friend, Li Qi-Mao of Taiwan.

South Korea’s Jang Soon-Up, well known for whimsical re-creations of folk traditions and Minhwa art; and our own batik-painting pioneer Datuk Chuah Thean Teng. His three artist children – Siew Teng, Seow Keng and Siew Kek

Veteran painter/printmaker/sculptor Lee Kian Seng to show off his groundbreaking creations as well as six sets of 1988 Lotus prints of six each

Choong Kam Kow, the 72-year-old president of the Malaysian Institute of Art, evoked Shaolin inner healing stances in his acrylic/serigraphy (silk-screen printing).

Enrique Wong Diaz’ Insomnio.Artists Cheah Yew Saik, Tew Nai Tong, Cheah Thien Soong (remember his painting transfers on Jindezhen pottery?), Lim Ka Seng, Koay Soo Kau, Sia Boon Chuan, former commando Abdul Ghani Ahmad, Low Kong Wen, Yong Khek Cheong and sculptor Heng Eow Lin showed off the experience of their years in their own inimitable ways.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman

Malaysia’s first Scorpene submarine was launched, named after the country’s first prime minister, His courage, wisdom and foresight had steered our nation to what it is today, was unveiled in a historic ceremony at the DCNS dockyard here, about 400km from Paris.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman is set to sail home, manned by the country’s first submarine crew in January 2009 while the second vessel, to be named KD Tun Razak, is expected to be delivered by October 2009.
